Welcome to a quick guide for readers who run into “wait, why isn’t this working?” moments on Decent Newsroom. Below you’ll find the most common issues and the fastest fixes.

## What is Decent Newsroom?

Decent Newsroom is a Nostr-based platform for discovering, curating, and publishing long-form content—built around magazines and search.

Unlike traditional platforms, Decent Newsroom doesn’t “own” the content. Articles are Nostr events that can be published and mirrored across relays, while Decent Newsroom focuses on **making them readable, searchable, and easy to curate into magazines**.

## How accounts work on Decent Newsroom
### You don’t make an account with email
Decent Newsroom does **not** store emails/passwords. Authentication is done via your **Nostr keys** (your npub identity).

### How to sign in
On the site, you’ll see login options like:

- **Extension** (a Nostr browser extension)
- **Signer** (a remote signer flow)

If you choose the remote signer option, you’ll see a QR-based pairing flow.
The option to copy/paste the connection into the signer isn't yet available, but it's in the works.

## Getting around: where to find things

### Newsstand (magazines)

**Newsstand** is the magazine rack: curated publications you can browse like sections of a newspaper.

### Explore (search)

**Explore** is the long-form discovery feed + search entry point, with category filters (Lifestyle, Tech, etc.).
You can use tags or keywords in the search bar, as well as Nostr identifiers. If you search a npub, for example, you'll be redirected to their profile page.
### Topics (tags you can browse)

**Topics** is a structured way to explore tags by theme (e.g., “Bitcoin & Sound Money,” “Artificial Intelligence,” etc.).

If you log in, Decent Newsroom looks for your interests event (kind `10015`) and lists those at the top.

### Multimedia

**Multimedia** is a serendipity-driven feed for media posts (images, video links, etc.). Each card is clickable and leads to the single post page.

### Highlights

**Highlights** surfaces noteworthy passages highlighted by the community. Decent Newsroom preferentially shows highlights of passages from Nostr-native articles.

## Reading lists: your personal “curation building blocks”

Decent Newsroom lets you create and share **reading lists** (curated lists). You can browse them when logged in, and create new ones from the Reading Lists page.
Reading lists also plug into magazine creation: in the magazine setup wizard, you can attach an existing reading list as a category using its coordinate.

## Why things sometimes look “delayed” on Nostr

Nostr content is relay-based and decentralized. That means discovery is partly an **indexing problem**: content may exist on relays Decent Newsroom isn’t currently crawling by default, or it may take time to be fetched and indexed.
Decent Newsroom also aims to be **fast to read**. Practically, that means you may see a page load instantly using a recently cached version, while the server refreshes content behind the scenes and the next view is updated. (This avoids “waiting on relays” during page load—critical on decentralized networks.)
Nostr is the source of truth; DN is the ‘print edition’ web page that anyone can open and preview. Decent Newsroom deliberately turns Nostr articles into fast, stable web pages that work everywhere. When you share a DN link, it includes the preview information—headline, cover image, and summary—so the link “unfurls” properly in group chats, social feeds, and messaging apps.
If you’re a creator and want Decent Newsroom to reliably fetch from *your declared relays*, **Active Indexing** exists specifically for that.

## Troubleshooting FAQ

### I can’t sign in / the signer pairing is stuck

- If using remote signer: close and reopen the pairing dialog.
- If using an extension: check that the extension is installed and allowed on this site.

### I can’t sign an event I created

We have a known issue when a browser has multiple Nostr signers available. It might feel like a slotmachine, but try a couple of times anyway.

### I can’t find an article I know exists on Nostr

Most often: it’s on relays outside the default crawl set.

The shortest path to importing an article or looking up any other event is to paste the naddr or nevent address into the search field on the Explore page.

We also offer Active Indexing. If you're an author and would like to see your content show up regularly, that is the “make sure DN fetches my declared relays” solution for publishers.

As a reader, try:

- searching in **Explore**
- browsing via **Topics**
- checking the author’s profile page and their Articles tab

### I’m seeing an older version of a page

This is usually the “fast load first, refresh after” behavior. Refresh the page once, or come back shortly—DN prioritizes speed, then revalidates.

### Media links don’t load

Some media is hosted externally and may depend on the original host being reachable. If a specific item is broken, send feedback with the link.

## Need help?

Use the **Send Feedback** page on Decent Newsroom for bug reports and feature requests.
https://files.sovbit.host/media/d475ce4b3977507130f42c7f86346ef936800f3ae74d5ecf8089280cdc1923e9/aa9c3080b51d1381fafb49c170e65d4022cc6c40102fec76bd9cced2c63b897c.webp
["decent newsroom","newsroom","dn","guide","readers
https://chat.decentnewsroom.com/mag/support-952317/cat/reading-838260/d/a-readers-guide-to-decent-newsroom-j1n5v0
When you want to add an article to your collection: a category in a magazine or a reading list, you can use the 'Add to reading list' shortcut.

![Add to list](https://image.nostr.build/ff2eaaf2f89fc03a994abeeb07a37952901a45c164ada6c66818ffdc3a16b44e.png)
The button will be visible on all article pages in Decent Newsroom after you log in.
This guide is for authors publishing long-form work on [Decent Newsroom](decentnewsroom.com). It covers: writing and formatting, setting the metadata that makes links share well, publishing to relays, updating posts, and the most common “why isn’t it showing up?” issues.

## What Decent Newsroom is (for writers)

Decent Newsroom is a Nostr-based publishing and discovery layer for long-form content. You publish an article as a Nostr event; DN turns it into a fast, stable web page that can be searched, browsed, and curated into magazines. DN doesn’t ask you to create an email/password account—authentication is done via your Nostr keys.

A practical benefit for writers: when you share a DN article link, it “unfurls” properly in chats and social apps (headline + cover image + summary), like a normal web publication—not a raw protocol object.

## How “accounts” work on DN (Nostr signing, not passwords)

DN does not store user emails/passwords; you authenticate by signing with your Nostr identity.

On DN you’ll typically see two login paths:

### 1) Browser extension (window.nostr)

Use a Nostr browser extension that can sign events for websites (the “Extension” option). DN will request signatures when you save/publish.

### 2) Remote signer (NIP-46 “bunker signer”)

DN can pair with a NIP-46-compatible remote signer via QR code. After pairing, any page that uses `window.nostr` will use that remote signer session automatically. If pairing stalls, retry the login.

Connection data is currently not available as a string you can copy into your signer. We're working on it.

## Create a new article

Go to the editor: [https://decentnewsroom.com/article-editor/create](https://decentnewsroom.com/article-editor/create).

At the top, DN offers multiple ways to write:

- **Rich Text** (WYSIWYG)
- **Markdown**
- **JSON** (direct event editing—advanced)
- **Preview**

You’ll also see **Save Draft** and **Publish** actions.

### A simple “first post” workflow

1. Write in **Rich Text** or **Markdown**.
2. Fill in the fields in the **Details** panel (title, summary, tags, cover).
3. Hit **Preview** to check layout.
4. **Save Draft** or **Publish**.

When saving a draft, you will remain in the editor after submission. When publishing, you will be redirected to the article page, if publishing succeeds, and you'll remain in the editor otherwise.

The editor doesn't currently have an auto-save function. It is on the feature wishlist, though.

## The “Details” panel: what makes your article shareable

DN’s “Details” panel is where you set the metadata that turns your Nostr event into a proper publication page.

### Title + Summary

- **Title**: obvious.
- **Summary**: DN explicitly labels this as “*A short description shown in previews*” — use this to give your readers a hint about what to expect in the article. This text will show up in article cards, where multiple articles are listed, and in rich previews when you share links.

### Slug

You can set a custom **slug** (used in the DN web URL). Slugs are special in Nostr. Slug is used to populate the `d` tag in your event. Slugs are unique, per one of your articles. If you reuse one, you will effectively overwrite the previous article with the new one. This is effective for revisions, but be sure to clear the slug when publishing a new article. DN will autogenerate a slug from your title if you leave the field blank.

### Tags

Add tags for discovery and topical browsing. Do not use the `#` signs; those are added for display by the clients and make matching equivalent tags harder.

### Cover image

DN supports uploading a cover image to a few preset providers. A cover image strongly improves link previews.

If you plan for it, you can use the same form to upload main body images. When you upload, the image URL will show up in the cover image input, and you can use it in the editor.

Resist the temptation to reuse the cover image in the body of the article again. Readers notice.

## Publishing: where your article goes (relays)

Nostr content lives on relays. DN exposes a **Relays** tab in the editor to show your known relays. Content will be published to your chosen relays and to the internal relay `relay.decentnewsroom.com`. You will eventually be able to pick and choose your relays.

Even when relays are correct, discovery can be “eventually consistent” (more on that below).

## Advanced options writers should know (optional)

The editor’s **Advanced** tab includes extra toggles/features that affect distribution and reader experience. Currently, the space is reserved for setting up zap splits.

### Zap splits

DN includes a **Zap Splits** section (e.g., “distribute equally,” add recipients/weights). Use this when multiple contributors should share zaps tied to the article. When you configure zap splits, they override the author as the recipient, so don't forget to add yourself to the list if you want to be included.

When zap splits are set on the article, the zap gets split into multiple invoices. The user sending the zaps can still pick and choose which invoices they pay.

## Updating an article

On Nostr, long-form articles are *addressable* events (kind **30023** in NIP-23). In practice, that means “editing” means **publishing a new version** that clients treat as the latest for that address (slug).

In DN’s UI: when you’re logged in, DN loads your known articles into the sidebar tab, and you can open one for editing with one click. Once opened, you update content/metadata and publish again.

## Why DN pages are fast (and why you might occasionally see older content)

Nostr is decentralized and relay-based, so a “fresh read” can require network calls to multiple relays. DN prioritizes fast page loads: it may show a recently cached version, refresh in the background, and then the next view is updated.

For writers, this matters in two places:

- Right after you publish, DN’s web page might need a refresh or a few minutes to show the newest version.
- Search/discovery may lag because indexing depends on relay fetch + processing.

## Getting found on DN (Active Indexing)

If you want DN to reliably fetch your long-form content from the relays you declare, DN offers **Active Indexing**. It’s explicitly described as: “makes sure Decent Newsroom fetches your long-form content from the relays you declare,” including “bypass quality gates” and “custom relay list configuration.”

## Sharing your work: DN link vs Nostr address

On DN article pages, the Share section offers both a **Newsroom Link** and **Naddr**. Use:

- **Newsroom Link** when you want maximum compatibility (anyone can open it, rich previews work).
- **Naddr** when sharing inside Nostr-native contexts.

## Troubleshooting FAQ (writer-focused)

### “I can’t sign in / the signer pairing is stuck”

- If using remote signer: close and reopen the pairing dialog (DN generates a new ephemeral key).
- If using an extension: confirm the extension is installed and permitted on the site.
- If nothing helps, let us know so we can fix it. Nost has an abundance of signers, and we haven't been able to test them all.

### “Publish clicked, but nothing happens / signing fails”

We've observed an issue when a browser has multiple signers available; retrying can help.

### “My article exists on Nostr but DN can’t find it”

Most commonly: it’s on relays outside DN’s default crawl set. The shortest import path is pasting an **naddr**/**nevent** into DN’s Explore search. Active Indexing is the “make sure DN fetches my declared relays” solution.

### “I’m seeing an older version of my page”

Refresh once, or revisit shortly—DN prioritizes speed, then revalidates.

## Need help?

Use DN’s **Send Feedback** link for bug reports and support.

https://files.sovbit.host/media/d475ce4b3977507130f42c7f86346ef936800f3ae74d5ecf8089280cdc1923e9/9c8fdb00d8bc0bfbc15e5e6cd8dee51768f30b2f59a84ba2fe20862ac58c5462.webp
["decent newsroom","newsroom","dn","guide","writers
https://chat.decentnewsroom.com/mag/support-952317/cat/publishing-9c8a37/d/a-writers-guide-to-decent-newsroom-cthg0r
Vanity Names are unique identifiers within Decent Newsroom. You can subscribe to get a short URL for your profile page and a NIP-05 identifier on decentnewsroom.com. You can claim the NIP-05 identifier by adding it to your profile.
### Active Indexing
Nostr is decentralized on purpose. Your articles can live on the relays you choose, and that freedom is the point—but it also means there is no single “master library” where readers will automatically find your work.
Decent Newsroom is built like a public reading room: anyone can browse without logging in, pages load fast, and content is searchable. To do that, DN runs a background indexer that collects long-form articles from a set of well-known open relays. It’s a good default, but by design it can never be complete.
**Active Indexing** is how you opt in to guaranteed discovery. Add your relay list, and DN will actively look for your long-form posts on those relays and include them in the index. The result: a stable web page for sharing, proper previews, and real “library-style” discovery—while your content stays Nostr-native and hosted where you want it.
### If you paid but don’t see your benefits
Decent Newsroom links subscription status/payment history to your **npub** for accounting/debug purposes.
Sometimes, the payment verification stalls. Those require that you sign the events, but you are not required to log in.
- Logging in means **signing an ephemereal event** with your Nostr identity (npub), using either:

- a **browser extension signer**, or
- a **remote signer** (often called a “bunker”).

## What is a “DN account”, really?

Your “account” on DN is your **Nostr public key** (**npub**).
DN treats that npub as your identity for:

- attributing your content
- loading your drafts/known articles for editing
- showing your interests at the top of the Topics page
- linking subscriptions/paid features (if any)
- personal features like lists and curation

DN does **not** need your email and does not run a password database.

### npub vs nsec (important)

- **npub** = public identifier (safe to share)
- **nsec** = private key (never share, never paste into websites)

DN should only ever see **signatures**, not your private key.

## How publishing works (what DN asks your signer to do)

When DN needs to prove “this action is from you”, it requests a cryptographic signature from your signer.

Typical signature moments:

- publishing an article
- updating an existing article
- creating or editing lists / magazine structures
- commenting

DN submits the signed event to relays (depending on your relay configuration and the feature).

## Ways to sign in

### 1) Browser extension signer (recommended for most users)

You install a Nostr extension in your browser. DN requests signatures through it when needed.

**Pros**

- simplest UX
- quick approvals

**Common issue**

- multiple signers installed → the browser may route requests unpredictably.

### 2) Remote signer (NIP-46 / “bunker”)

Instead of a local extension, you pair DN to a remote signer (often on your phone or a dedicated signing service). DN then asks that signer to approve signatures.

**Pros**

- your keys don’t live in the browser
- works well across devices

**Common issue**

- pairing can stall; re-open the pairing dialog to retry.

## Switching accounts / using multiple identities

If you have more than one Nostr identity:

- your **current signer** determines which npub DN is using.
- if something “doesn’t show up” (articles, subscriptions, lists), the first thing to check is: **am I logged in as the same npub that created/purchased it?**

Currently logged in user is listed in the menu (left sidebar).

Practical tip: keep a note of which npub you use for “publishing” vs “personal browsing”.

## Privacy and safety (plain language)

- DN can see your **npub** and the content/events you choose to publish or interact with.
- DN should **not** need your private key.
- Treat signing prompts like permission prompts: if something looks unexpected, **reject** and investigate.

## Troubleshooting sign-in and signing

### “I can’t log in”

- Ensure your signer is installed / reachable.
- If you use a remote signer: re-open pairing and try again.

### “Publish clicked, nothing happened”

- Look for a signer approval prompt (extension pop-up or remote signer request).
- If you have multiple signers installed, disable one temporarily and retry.

### My article was published only to some relays

Relay communications can be interrupted. You'll be able to broadcast your event from the article page, pushing the same version to the relays. There's no need to republish.

### “I’m logged in, but my articles aren’t in the sidebar”

- The DN crawler has not yet found your articles. They will show up eventually.
- You may be on a different npub than the one that authored them. In that case, log in with the other npub and reload the editor.
https://files.sovbit.host/media/d475ce4b3977507130f42c7f86346ef936800f3ae74d5ecf8089280cdc1923e9/4f3d85525dfaedfb74dadc72a276af2f933904b5b36ef3ea29be34ad818900d8.webp
["decent newsroom","newsroom","dn","guide","writers
https://chat.decentnewsroom.com/mag/support-952317/cat/general-0c2cb1/d/accounts-on-decent-newsroom-4nck58
