DOJ Investigates Funding for E. Jean Carroll's Lawsuits Against Trump

The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into the funding of E. Jean Carroll's civil lawsuits against Donald Trump. The probe focuses on a nonprofit run by billionaire Reid Hoffman, which provided financial support for Carroll's legal expenses. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago has clarified that Carroll herself is not the target of the investigation.

DOJ Investigates Funding for E. Jean Carroll’s Lawsuits Against Trump The Justice Department’s handling of the E. Jean Carroll saga has become a Rorschach test for how Americans see law, politics, and media—especially as the story shifted from a reported perjury probe of Carroll herself to a criminal inquiry into the Democratic mega-donor–backed nonprofit that helped fund her lawsuits against Donald Trump.

Initially, several outlets framed the development as a direct attack on Carroll. The Guardian reported that federal prosecutors were examining whether Carroll “committed perjury in a 2022 deposition” about outside financial support for her civil suits against Trump, after it emerged that a nonprofit funded by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman had paid some of her legal fees. An earlier CBS story likewise described “a criminal investigation into whether E. Jean Carroll committed perjury,” hinging on whether she lied about not receiving outside funding.

Liberal commentators largely interpreted this as political payback. The Atlantic called the reported DOJ move “brazenness,” arguing it fit a pattern of using government power “to target individuals or entities for improper and unlawful political, personal, or ideological reasons,” and casting Carroll as a successful accuser now facing institutional retaliation. Wonkette went further, characterizing the probe as Trump’s “beclowned Justice Department…going after all Trump’s enemies,” in this case a woman who “kept winning multi-million-dollar judgments against you.”

Conservative outlets, by contrast, emphasized the integrity of Carroll’s testimony and the role of Democratic money. The Blaze highlighted a “criminal perjury probe involving Democrat mega-donor” Hoffman, suggesting Carroll and her lawyers tried to conceal who was bankrolling her offensive against Trump.

But a second wave of reporting complicated both narratives. A follow-up CBS report clarified that the investigation is focused on American Future Republic, Hoffman’s nonprofit, for possible “money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction,” and that “Carroll is not the target of the investigation.” The Washington Examiner underscored U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros’s categorical denial: his Chicago office “has not opened — and has never opened — a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll,” while confirming the DOJ is instead examining the nonprofit that covered some of her legal expenses.

The competing framings—personal retaliation against a Trump accuser versus a legitimate inquiry into opaque political funding—converge on one reality: a justice system whose decisions now arrive pre-interpreted through partisan lenses, long before prosecutors lay out their full theory of the case.
