Serbia Wins WDSF European Dance Sport Championship in Novi Sad
Serbia Wins WDSF European Dance Sport Championship in Novi Sad Serbia didn’t just host a European dance championship — it turned it into a home-floor power play, pairing medals with messaging about national prestige and sporting ambition.
From 13 to 17 May, Novi Sad’s SPENS arena transformed into a continental dance hub as it welcomed the WDSF European Championship in Stage and Disco dance, billed as “one of the largest dance events in the region,” drawing over 2,500 competitors from 20 European countries. For five days, the venue was “the center of the European dance scene,” showcasing top choreographies and elite dancers.
On the floor, Serbia crushed the field. The national team topped the overall standings with 36 gold, 28 silver and 26 bronze medals, “convincingly” taking first place among all participants. Even when counting only the official championship disciplines and excluding open categories, Serbia still led with 19 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze, “confirming the status of one of the leading European powers in dance sport.”
Officials quickly spun the score into a broader narrative. The event “once again showed that Serbia possesses organizational capacities for events of the highest international level,” pro-government outlets declared. World DanceSport Federation vice president Nenad Jeftić praised the championship’s organization and Serbia’s results, stressing it all unfolded “at the highest European level.”
Local authorities seized on the soft-power moment. Novi Sad city sports official Tatjana Medved called hosting such a major competition “hugely important for the promotion of Novi Sad and the development of sport among young people,” saying the city had again proven it can run Europe’s biggest sporting events. Dance Sport Federation of Serbia president Slađana Ivanišević framed the medal haul as proof of “many years of work and development,” arguing Serbian dancers now firmly belong at “the very European top.”
By the final curtain, the championship was being sold not just as a tournament, but as a statement: Serbia on the map, and in this sport at least, firmly on top.
