Continuum v1.6.7.7 — Toward a Fully Encrypted Sovereign Workspace

Today's work pushed Continuum further toward becoming a true sovereign local-first workspace. The focus was not on “cloud sync” or engagement mechanics. It was on reducing plaintext exposure, improving encrypted workspace handling, and making the local environment more durable and portable across different deployment models. Another important milestone: PDF exports are now supported consistently across all build types, including environments where WeasyPrint is unavailable.

One of the recurring themes in Continuum has been the separation between creation and distribution.

Today’s work reinforced another distinction that matters just as much:

usable locally vs. secure at rest.

Those are not the same thing.

Many systems claim to be “local-first” simply because keys are stored on the device. But if the entire workspace remains readable in plaintext while the system is shut down, the sovereignty story is incomplete.

That is part of what today’s progress addressed.

The current direction is moving Continuum toward a model where the workspace itself can be encrypted and locked as a coherent unit:

  • identities
  • drafts
  • tombstones
  • nostr event db
  • vault data

This is not merely about “adding encryption.”

It is about reducing the number of accidental plaintext artifacts left behind during normal usage.

The more I work on Continuum, the more obvious it becomes that local-first authorship requires thinking carefully about runtime state transitions:

  • lock
  • unlock
  • import
  • export
  • clear workspace
  • encrypted backup enforcement

These transitions matter because sovereignty is not only about ownership of keys.

It is also about understanding exactly when your data exists in readable form and when it does not.

A cloud platform abstracts all of this away from the user.

Continuum intentionally exposes these concepts because they are real.

Today’s work also included deeper integrity validation around encrypted workspaces and more runtime-safe handling of lock/unlock flows.

That may sound minor from the outside, but these details become extremely important once a workspace starts behaving more like a portable sovereign environment rather than “just another app.”

There was also progress around encrypted workspace packaging.

Instead of selectively protecting isolated pieces of data, the architecture is increasingly moving toward treating the workspace itself as the protected unit.

That changes the mental model entirely.

The goal is not merely:

“my password database is encrypted.”

The goal becomes:

“my workspace exists in a protected state unless I intentionally unlock it.”

That distinction matters.

Another practical improvement today was standardizing PDF export support across all build types.

Continuum now supports PDF exports consistently whether running:

  • locally
  • in Docker
  • in packaged desktop builds
  • or in fallback environments without WeasyPrint

If WeasyPrint is available, Continuum uses it for higher quality rendering.

If it is unavailable, the export still works through the fallback path instead of simply disabling the feature.

That consistency matters because portability has become a major design goal of the project.

The environment should not determine whether core authorship features work.

This was not a flashy day of development - No dashboards pretending to be revolutionary.

But the system became more coherent.

More durable, portable and hontest

And honestly, that matters more.
