Meta Rolls Out AI Business Agent Globally on WhatsApp Meta is accelerating its long‑planned effort to turn WhatsApp from a simple messaging tool into a revenue‑generating business platform, betting that AI-powered agents can handle much of the work currently done by human support teams.

Early testing: AI inside WhatsApp Business

Over the past two years, Meta quietly tested AI assistants for customer support within WhatsApp Business in markets such as India and Mexico, refining how bots respond to queries and when they should hand conversations back to human staff. These trials focused on routine tasks like answering FAQs and handling basic sales questions.

Global launch of Meta Business Agent

On June 3, Meta announced that its customer-support bot, now branded the Meta Business Agent, is being rolled out globally for businesses using WhatsApp. The agent can “answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and reroute queries to a person if needed,” according to reporting on the launch.

The tool is also being integrated into Instagram DMs, with Meta testing features such as daily summaries of overnight chats and insights for business owners across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite.

From communication layer to workflow hub

For years, WhatsApp has served as a lightweight communications layer for companies worldwide. Meta now aims to make it “a viable piece of workflow software for small and medium businesses,” reshaping it into a place where sales, support and scheduling all happen inside chat. The company is also building a platform so larger enterprises can create custom agents tied into systems like Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee.

The business model: AI as a revenue engine

Financially, the move is central to Meta’s push to “unlock WhatsApp revenues” through AI agents rather than relying mainly on messaging fees and click‑to‑WhatsApp ads. Meta plans to charge for the Meta Business Agent via WhatsApp Business Premium tiers, while large enterprises will pay on a token-usage basis, directly linking AI activity to new income streams.

This expansion marks a broader strategic bet by Meta leadership that AI agents embedded in everyday messaging will turn WhatsApp into a far bigger business than traditional advertising alone can support.
