Early context: Anthropic first, then Google

In late May, SpaceX disclosed a landmark compute deal with AI startup Anthropic, which agreed to pay $1.25 billion per month through 2029 to rent all available compute from SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center near Memphis, Tennessee, for access to GPUs and related infrastructure. That agreement effectively positioned SpaceX as a major wholesale provider of AI compute.

Just days later, attention shifted to another tech giant. Coverage noted that “Google follows Anthropic in signing a compute deal with SpaceX,” signaling that the partnership model pioneered with Anthropic was expanding to larger incumbents.

The June 5 regulatory reveal

On June 5, 2026, a regulatory filing detailed that Google would pay SpaceX $920 million per month from October 2026 through June 2029 for access to “approximately 110,000 NVIDIA GPUs, CPUs, memory, and other related components.” Reports described the arrangement under the headline, “Google will pay SpaceX $920M per month for compute.”

SpaceX’s S-1 for its upcoming IPO was amended to include the deal, prompting online buzz. Elon Musk amplified a post noting that SpaceX had “quietly amended its S-1” to announce “another mega deal $920M/month from Google from October 2026 through June 2029,” with both parties able to terminate on 90 days’ notice.

How each side frames the deal

From SpaceX’s perspective, the Google agreement is another long-term revenue stream that complements the Anthropic deal, with Google apparently paying for roughly half the compute Anthropic receives at Colossus 1.

Google, by contrast, describes the arrangement as a tactical response to surging AI usage. “Google Cloud and SpaceX are long-time partners,” the company said, calling it “a short-term, timely agreement to ensure we have bridge capacity to meet surging customer demand for our agent platform, Gemini Enterprise, which has been even higher than we expected.”

Together, the deals underscore a shifting landscape in which AI leaders—startups and giants alike—are increasingly willing to rent capacity from nontraditional data-center providers as they race to keep up with demand.
