Apple VP Paul Meade Reportedly Leaves for OpenAI Apple is losing one of the key architects of its mixed-reality ambitions just as it doubles down on wearables, while OpenAI moves to deepen its push into dedicated AI hardware.

Paul Meade, Apple’s hardware vice president in charge of the Vision Pro headset, is reportedly leaving the company to join OpenAI’s hardware team. Meade also led development of Apple’s planned AI-powered smart glasses, which the company reportedly hopes will offer a more affordable way to compete with Meta’s wearable devices after the costly Vision Pro “was not a hit.”

The timing comes amid a major leadership transition in Cupertino. Apple’s executive shakeup follows the elevation of John Ternus to succeed Tim Cook as CEO, with Bloomberg reporting that changes to the hardware engineering structure left some vice presidents feeling demoted — a dynamic framed as contributing to Meade’s decision to leave. Another report notes that his departure lands “as the executive shakeup under new Apple CEO John Ternus continues,” underscoring broader turbulence at the top of Apple’s hardware organization.

From OpenAI’s perspective, Meade’s move adds rare, high-end consumer hardware experience at a moment when the company is trying to turn its AI models into physical products. OpenAI is already working with former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive on an AI device that CEO Sam Altman has described as “more peaceful and calm than an iPhone,” though earlier reports suggested the project had struggled to “get the details right.” At OpenAI, Meade is expected to reunite with ex-Apple designers including Ive, Tang Tan, and Evans Hankey after OpenAI purchased their hardware startup last year.

For Apple, Meade’s exit highlights both the strategic importance and fragility of its mixed-reality and wearables roadmap. For OpenAI, it signals a bet that marrying elite Apple-style hardware talent with cutting-edge AI could define the next generation of personal devices.
