Each day that passes immersed in the Bitcoin ecosystem, thinking and acting under the logic of a true circular economy, makes one truth increasingly inescapable: the efficacy, simplicity, and utility of interacting within this tech stack is revolutionary. Moving on the base layer (On-Chain), expanding micropayments (Lightning), and communicating without censorship (Nostr)—all under the unwavering banner of self-custody—is not merely a financial alternative; it is the architecture of freedom.
However, whilst we build and operate within this technological trinity, the noise outside is deafening.
The Noise, Blindness, and Lack of Sovereignty
The confusion transmitted by the vast majority of people—perhaps a reflection of a society that has surrendered its biological sovereignty, vaccinating itself and dragging along dietary habits that dull the mind and spirit—is generating a massive obstacle. This cognitive fog not only affects their health but acts as a brutal brake on the genuine adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender. People want the price, they want the speculation, but they flee from the responsibility that sound money demands.
Given the nature of this situation, observing community communications in this space (Nostr) and other environments reveals an evident pattern. The manner of transmitting messages, the superficiality, and the lack of “essence” in what is published lay bare what is truly happening at the root of our ecosystem: there is a profound disconnect between the tool we hold in our hands and the understanding of why we need it.
The Silent War Within the Protocol
Whilst the masses watch the price, the future is being decided in the code trenches. I have been republishing and analysing events concerning the recent debates between Bitcoin Knots (BIP110) and Bitcoin Core, in which Matthew Kratter actively participates. Why do I do this? It is not to sell, nor to promote the products or services that sometimes emerge as by-products in these developer conversations. I do it with a far more urgent objective: to demonstrate that we must take action, at least those of us who bear the responsibility of running a node.
These debates are not nerd drama; they are the fight for the soul of the protocol. It is the difference between a Bitcoin that resists censorship and a Bitcoin that adapts to corporate conveniences. At present, perhaps few observe it, or they are simply incapable of discerning the nature of the problem. But in the long term—and this being one of Bitcoin’s fundamental premises—what is debated in the code today will define our freedom tomorrow.
The Illusion of Convenience: Tourists in Your Own Revolution
Today we must be aware of what is happening and, above all, act. Because let us be honest: what good does it do to “zap” your friends through custodial Lightning wallets when perhaps tomorrow those servers will be shut down, confiscated, or centralised by a government in power?
If you use a custodian, you are not using Bitcoin; you are using a database that simulates being Bitcoin.
The problem replicates in our communication. Many are on Nostr, but they act as if they were on the centralised social networks to which they have sadly become accustomed. They post for posting’s sake, seeking validation rather than building digital sovereignty. Perhaps you continue using Web2 networks in parallel; that is your decision. But if you are on Nostr and cannot discern the ideological battle being waged at Bitcoin’s root, then you are merely a tourist.
Conclusion: Self-Custody or Irrelevance
Being in the ecosystem does not make you free; self-custody and conscious action do. The battle for sound money and sovereign communication is not won with likes nor with balances in third-party applications. It is won by running nodes, signing with your own keys, understanding protocol debates, and rejecting the comfort that makes you vulnerable.
The noise outside will continue. The confusion of the masses will persist. But at the root, the code does not lie. Wake up, run your node, take the keys to your Lightning, and stop treating Nostr as if it were Twitter (X), Meta or Google. The revolution is not zapped; it is built.
