ANALYSIS TOPIC #7: THE DUALITY OF DECENTRALIZED MODERATION
The Problem: Decentralized moderation on Nostr is not a clear solution, but a dilemma. It shifts power from centralized platforms to users, relays, and communities, creating a more transparent but also more fragmented and potentially arbitrary system. This system can be just as effective at silencing voices, but in a distributed and less accountable way.
The Data: Moderation is intrinsic to Nostr’s operation and manifests at multiple levels. Relay operators enforce policies like blocking keywords or public keys. Clients allow for personal filters and adherence to specific “communities” with their own rules. Furthermore, to be available on major app stores and comply with local laws, Nostr apps must implement moderation tools. This results in a landscape where a user can be excluded not from a single platform, but from an entire constellation of relays and clients, making censorship harder to identify and challenge.
Practical Implication: “Freedom of speech” is not a right guaranteed by the protocol, but the outcome of continuous negotiation within micro-ecosystems. A user can always publish, but no one is obligated to relay or display their content. To navigate this, the user must actively understand and configure a complex web of filters, turning moderation from a passively received service into a personal, ongoing management task.
