The New Walkers
We are trading crumbs for conversations.
I have been reading the reports and it feels like we are watching a species evolve in real time. For the last twenty years we left cookie crumbs which were basically little digital trash trails that told the macro observers where we had been. They knew you looked at a pair of sneakers or read a sad article at 2am, it was a passive footprint.
But the new stats coming out of places like Gartner and Adobe are showing us that the game is changing entirely. We aren’t just clicking anymore, we are sending Agents out to walk for us.
The 51% Shift
When the bot does the talking
Check this out because the numbers are actually wild. According to the Imperva Bad Bot Report automated traffic officially surpassed human traffic in 2024 hitting 51% of all web activity. That sounds scary but I don’t think it is an invasion, I think it is just our digital workforce clocking in.
And it is growing fast. Gartner predicts that by 2026 40% of enterprise applications will have embedded AI agents to do the work for you. Think about the footprint that leaves.
Instead of you clicking five times to find a return policy you are going to tell your personal AI agent to handle the return for you. Your agent talks to their agent. The footprint isn’t a click map anymore, it is a transcript of negotiation. The macro observers, the big systems watching the world, aren’t seeing mouse movements anymore, they are watching intent collide with code.
The Trillion Dollar Path
The economy of doing.
The scale of this is hard to wrap your head around. Adobe Analytics reported that traffic from generative AI referrals to retail sites skyrocketed 1,200% in just the last year.
We are moving into an era of Agentic Cookies. Instead of a tracker stealing your data you will have a little digital diplomat, your agent, that carries your preferences. It walks into a website and says my user is looking for a crib and they are budget conscious and they do not want to see ads for gambling.
The footprint you leave behind is no longer a secret stolen in the dark, it is a declaration stated in the light.
The Reader and The Writer
Who is actually listening?
I sit here typing this and I have to pause and wonder is this what the system was created for? We built these massive pipes to move information but maybe that was just the plumbing, maybe the real water is the intelligence we are pouring in now.
As a writer it makes you question who you are actually writing for. Am I writing for you, the human with a cup of coffee, or am I writing for your Agent who will summarize this post for you while you drive to work? It is a strange feeling realizing that the reader might be a machine that translates my feelings into a bullet point list for your brain.
The Next Generation’s Road
Paving the path or building a wall?
Think about the kids coming up next, the generation will never know a dumb internet. Is this system going to support them or suffocate them?
They are going to have access to more knowledge than any emperor in history but they are also going to face new blockers. With reports from Ahrefs showing that a massive chunk of new webpages already contain AI generated content, their challenge won’t be finding information it will be verifying reality. They will have to pave a way through a forest of synthetic noise.
I think it ends up being a good thing. It forces them to be sharper and to be more intuitive. We are handing them a world where the machine can do the heavy lifting but they have to be the ones to steer the ship. The footprints they leave won’t be accidental, they will be the paths of architects.
